Tot Talk: Yes or No for Piercing?

I'm curious? I saw the most adorable baby the other day with the cutest little stud earrings on. I started to take notice of the babies around me and I found out that quite few mom's these days are piercing their babies ears.

There is no medical reason not to do this and it's the parent's prerogative to make that choice. Parents say that it doesn't hurt the baby and apparently the baby doesn't feel too much discomfort from the actual piercing. Read  more...

When it comes to piercing are you a Yes or a No?  There seems to be quite a debate about baby piercings. Although most parents who choose to pierce their babies ears do so, because they think it's cute and a fashion statement. In some cases it comes down to traditions, but some people pierce their babies ears to make sure that everyone knows that the baby is a girl or boy (boys having one ear pierced.)

There are parents who don't want their child to have any piercing until the age of 5, and then there are parents that take a firm stance saying, "absolutely not, until my child is eighteen." Some parents think.., if babies have their ears pierced- those parents have taken away that child's free choice. Hmm?

Here's what I know,  should you choose to have your child's ears pierced be very careful who you take your baby too for the piercings. Make sure that the person who is giving the piercing is fully trained and that all equipment is safety approved and sterilize. Nowadays, parents are taking their babies or children to Pediatrics , (in office care) who recommends that you wait until your child has had at least three rounds of shots (for tetanus reasons only), this would make your baby about six months old.  Pediatrics will also teach you proper ear care cleaning for your baby.

F.Y.I. When ear's are first pierced, the body thinks it has been wounded and it wants to heal it's-self, but can't due to the foreign object that is in the way.  This is why some children may have swelling or redness after piercings. Watch for crusty earlobes, scabs or fevers and see your Paediatric if you notice any of these signs. Keep those little earlobes clean everybody.

What do you think about pierced ears on babies? Does your baby have pierced ears and did you have  any difficulties?

  1. Admittedly, I know a lot of people have strong feelings when to pierce a child’s ear. “Let them decide” is being replaced by parental decision when mommy intuition knows, “earlier is better” from either personal or friend’s experiences of unpleasant childhood ear piercing. I think it just depends on your
own personal choice whether or not you wish your baby or little girl to have pierced ears.

Initially, I was unsure too and worried what others would say if I was "one of those moms who pierced their baby's ears." Dh was it was okay, but wanted me to ask our ped for her opinion about having our dd's ears pierced.

I was surprised at our ped's response to my query. She reached in her pocket and took out a picture of her six month little girl with gold balls in each ear, saying," ...this is what I think." She encouraged me to go ahead and said it was best as an infant when mommy could care for them. She has never had a baby with a pierced ear infection, but has had quite a few older girls ages 2-5 who said they wanted it done, but failed to care for them. She gave me some " suggestions for moms having their dd's ears pierced." Some are mentioned in your nice article above.

Our ped felt it was best early when I could care for them. When I heard this, I was relieved about worrying what others would say and took her the next day to have them pierced :) She also said most babies will cry a bit, but it is because of being restrained or the noise of the piercing instrument near their ears, not any pain because the ear lobe is so thin when the ear is pierced, it is barely felt.

Pam, I think your own situation plays into to your own perceptions like mine when you said, "...I saw the most adorable baby the other day with the cutest little stud earrings on. I started to take notice of the babies around me and I found out that quite few mom's these days are piercing their babies ears." You not the only one. Recently, my attention was called to it when a mom in my playgroup came with her 2 month baby girl and cute little gold ball earrings in each ear! She was totally adorable. Many of th other moms like myself began asking her a 100 questions.

Afterwards, I realized that my ped was right and I went ahead and had her ears pierced after reading and following my ped's tip how and where to find the right person and place to pierce my dd's ear safely.

If any moms are curious and would like any of our ped’s suggestions, then don’t hesitate to write me an e-mail.

  2. I think a child should be able to make that choice themselves. Babies can't do that. JMHO

  3. My children will choose when to have their ears pierced...not necessarily when they are an adult but when they reach a level of maturity that they can care for the piercing. I personally had mine pierced when I was 9 and i was taught to sterilize my jewelry and to properly clean the area.
Also, it really does hurt. I have 9 different piercings and they all hurt..some worse than others. The worse ones were done by a piercing
    gun.
That being said, I do not pass judgement on parents who choose to pierce their babies' ears. It is not my place to say what is right for other families. Although it looks cute on little ones, it's just not for me.

  6. I had my daughters done and SOO glad I did not a peep out of her and they were healed within a few wks as she didnt bother with them at all she was super proud though showing them off too cute. Really she still has the choice just without the pain because if she doesnt want them as she gets older all she has to do is take them out so technically I didnt take any choice from her. Babies ear lobes are so thin still thats why it doesnt really hurt them trust me her needles were much worse. I remember being little wanting them so bad but being too scared to get them so now she doesnt have to go through that and can decide to keep them or not when shes older. Not an ounce of regret:)

  7. Thanks for all your comments!! ( I love hearing what you have to say)

I wish that my daughter had her ears pierced when she was a baby, instead I waited until she was 5. On that ear piercing day we were both so excited, but when it came right down to it, it was a disaster!

My daughter screamed all the way through it. While she was flinching and crying, I watched in horror as two young ladies held her down and pulled the trigger at the same time. It was so sad.
When it was all over, I let my red face, tears streaming, distraught daughter buy anything she wanted in mall on that day. The crying only lasted for a short while, but boy did I feel guilty.

knowledge is everything..and I didn't have very much on that day. Leave your comments here or on Facebook at, wee care clinic
